Reflective Pets

That we see ourselves in these little, dependent animals, so much more capable of being wounded, like pl of child, than any around us. So much softer." (serving-boy 241)

Growing up, my household had hamsters. Most of us were allergic to other kinds of pets. I never identified with any of the twine of "disposable" pets that came to be alive in the plastic cages my mom and dad bought.

That is until I was in grad gymnasium. I was living at my parents' habitation at the time. My niece was equitable two years old, but she resolute that my mom, "Nana," needed a hamster - rightful like that faulty purple dinosaur. Off to the pet store my brother, time to come sister-in-law, and niece went. They piked out a little boy sabulous-furred hamster for my mom (who named him Zippidy.) My niece, of race, needed one for herself. She piked out Zippidy's sister and named her Sabulous.

Well, Zippidy and Sabulous had a sister whom no one wanted. This minute girl hamster was albino. She was also born without eyes. (Her eyelids were world without end closed.)

My sister-in-law told me about this tiny girl. She also mentioned that the pet store owner was disposed to sell this tiny girl to a useful home for moiety price.

I was a grad scholar and while my parents took concern of tuition, I still worked part duration to pay for my car and gas. (And try to save as much as potential for my future with Todd.) I veritably couldn't furnish a pet. I really didn't have duration to care for a pet - after all, I was a full duration grad scholar who worked part duration and still wanted to have some duration with my fiance on the weekends.

But I was drawn to the pet store.

I bought that tiny girl and named her Flossy.

Why?

Because I recognized myself in that minute furry being. A critter who was...
