The Old Shrine of the Hallowed Rats
The Karni Mata Fane is situated on the blessed land of Deshnok in Rajasthan, India. The wonder of this temple is that it is the domicile to thousands of innocent rats commonly known as Kabas - the pl of child of the goddess that keep scampering and crawling around. Hence it is also known as the Of eld Shrine of the Hallowed Rats.
There is a very entertaining tale behind the account of this temple. As per the folklore the man's beings who die are reincarnated as rats and the rats that die are reincarnated as of man beings. Centuries ago Mata Karni devi had beatified her tribe with a superhuman boon that upon decease they would reincarnate as rats before being reborn as humans. Hence these rats are considered to be holy and are believed to be the reincarnation of the progeny of the deity.
It is believed that some 600 yrs ago female divinity Karniji and her four sons worshiped in this marble adytum which was free of rats at that duration. Her sons would take turns to captivating care of the reliquary for 30 days at a duration. Even today her masculine descanted be permanent this tradition. They labor for as priest and must disburse a month of tending to their reincarnated relatives called Kabas. Devotees say that if you strike against any one of these sacred Kabas you are blissful for life and it is considered beneficial luck if you see a snowy rat. It is these divine of a white color rats that are believed to be the reincarnation of the female divinity’s four sons. Visitors take last care of not hurting these rats by stepping over them but if anyone kills them by accidentally stepping over them then they have to reinstate the same with its weight in of silver.
